The prior owner of #58 moved the battery from the trunk to under the hood, but left the cables and tray. I am installing a new Delco battery back in the original trunk location, but need to know the correct location of the positive and negative terminals on the battery when installed in the battery compartment.

The slot for the braided negative cable in the floor of the battery compartment is toward the front of the car and the positive cable enters the battery compartment from the rear, but is long enough to reach a front terminal position on top of the battery. What are the correct positive and negative terminal positions? Thanks for your help.

On my Brougham, the negative pole is at the front, the positive at the rear. The poles are towards the trunk compartment (I don't know if its correct, but to have them towards the fender would complicate the removal of the cables); be careful with that arrangement because the positive pole may contact the battery cover.
I can do pictures if you need them.

Roger,

I have had both styles of battery, post outboard and posts inboard.  Seems the last time I had to get a battery, the store only had the version which I was not using.  The closest size battery is taller than original, so the distance from the post to the top of the quarter panel is tight.  I was very careful in doing the positive post first and then connecting the negative terminal.  Do the cable connections after getting the hold downs on it.  It is kind of crummy process since you have undo the spare tire tie down and shift it inboard to get the cover off.  Access is tight.  I had to extend the stud on one of the studs to get it to reach the hold down frame.  The photos are from when I was working on the car over 10 years ago.

Well David, the battery's floor was rather thin then!
