I picked my 78 Eldorado up today from my mechanic that has been reliable in working on our other cars from Nissan, Cadillacs to Mercedes and Kia's.  He specializes in imports

He replaced all 4 rotors, all 4 brake calipers and the master cylinder.  I had a doctor appointment and traffic was horrific and got there shortly after closing.  On the way home I noticed some sound coming from both rear wheels.  It is a constant noise that mostly goes away when I press on the brakes.  The rotors are the ones that are all painted black.

I am going to call him today to discuss this.  I know this is a shot in the dark but what could this possibly be?

On a side note he did get my horn working which was disconnected when I bought the car and would honk when I hooked up the wires.  Part of the plastic trim was broke off and in the glove box.

Lastly he said the air ride motor was bad and needing replacing.  (Are these available in remanufactured?

Thanks for your help,

Dennis

I'm not sure what these black rotors are, but the rubber brake lines should be replaced even if they look good.  There are inner and outer hoses going to each wheel, and the inner hose (which you can't see) often has disintegrated.  It's possible that one of the calipers is dragging slightly because fluid is leaking between the hoses instead of going to the caliper.

There should not be any paint on the rotors.

But I would be getting the mechanic to the car, and not the car to the mechanic, as there could be something really wrong, or it could be something simple.   Not worth having something go wrong on the way.

J. Skelly That is on me, I just gave him the parts to install.  I will have to get the hoses and take them up to him.

Hey Bruce, Yes there is a new at least new to me type of rotor that is painted

Thanks for your replies.

If your noise is a rattle that stops if you press lightly on the brake pedal, it is likely that the metal back of the brake pads is floating inside the caliper and rattling against the caliper when the brakes are fully released. Manufacturers have used various fixes for this. For my 71 Pontiac they used a self-adhesive pad looking like contact paper on the back of the pad metal surface. Some cars used a special clip that held the disc pad tightly against the piston in the caliper to stop the looseness. There may have been other fixes, also.
