Laurie,
I've got a couple dip sticks, but I was wondering why you need the part number and what happened to yours?

After my engine was rebuilt, the proper oil level didn't register as it should on the dipstick.  I just marked it at the new "full" mark and moved along with my business.

Chris,
As has been discussed here the dip stick tube "bending" is unique to Cadillac motors and shops not familiar with it get it wrong, leading to either inaccurate readings or bent and destroyed dip sticks.

Thanks Ralph, you da man.
Even with 5 quarts of oil, including a filter change, my stick still says down a quart. Michael said to check the part
number, it could be the wrong stick. I'll check tomorrow, thank you.

I bought a replacement tube and stick from Chips Caddies on ebay.  He has a lot of options.

You will need to look around in his stuff

https://www.ebay.com/itm/201622557892

He will give you a sheet explaining the install and the need to bend around the crank.

Laurie,
PLEASE understand.  We are just trying to help you get things right. There are several operations specific to these motors, and most of us (me for one) had to learn the hard way on the dip stick tube bending. It is unlike any other motor.  That said, the only way to change the dipstick tube bend is to remove the oil pan which I am sure you do not want to do.  The other "work around" is to measure the distance between the full mark and the oil mark when ful and trim that much off the top of the dip stick tube.  It works, I've done it.

I've thought about using a tubing cutter to cut my dipstick tube down a bit, but worried a bit of metal might find it's way down the tube.  I suppose you could use a shop vac at the cut location while cutting, but I've just learned to live with it and have other, bigger fish to fry.

As a side note, Marty did my engine back in '14, IIRC.

The best way is as Greg and Chris have suggested.  The dip stick probably worked before, and so it should work again.  The length of the dip stick can be easily extended rather than cutting the dip stick tube.  Or the dip stick can be remarked to the full position.

Its just odd... the car takes 5 quarts with a new oil filter.
Did the oil change, checked the stick the next day, says down a quart.
I'm not adding any oil, but I'd like the stick to be accurate. "Possible" its the wrong
dip stick... I'll check the part number, I'm 'assuming' its on the stick.

Scot the only way I can see to lengthen the stick is to take the curl out of the top where
the handle is?

Sounds like the rebuilder didn't install the tube in far enough.

To allow the stick to go deeper, you would have to reposition the stop on the stick, which in itself would require a bit of metalwork.

This is a common problem with engine rebuilds, where the block has to be stripped, and the casing for the stich has to be replaced.

With yours, is there a lip around the tube where it goes into the Block?   As shown in the picture?

If there is not, then I would think that the tube is not the correct one.

Bruce. >:D

PS.   The tube next to the dipstick tube is the installation tool that I made.   It sat over the part, and on the lip, and allowed the tube to be pressed in without destruction.

So there's no part number on my stick...
It is 21.5" long from the top of the cap...
It says 4 quarts on the stick...
I noticed 3 (I think) new marks on the edge of the stick, like something internally is
rubbing up against it.

Maybe I just need something to be worried about....

Marks on the dipstick, if they are new are from the crank or the end of one of the rods as they rotate.  The dip stick tube was not bent correctly when the motor was assembled.  This is a VERY common error.

When my 1968 was overhauled in the fall of 2017 the tube was not initially installed correctly but they caught it before installing the engine and re installed it. And yes the oil pan had to come back off, but it was still on the engine stand.

Yep, sounds like "Add 1 Quart" is my new "Full". Its all good.

Driving The Ark EVERY DAY, 8.6MPG, right on the money.
(NOW everyone will tell me their mileage is better, I - don't - care.)

Took The Ark on a long, and emotional, trip last Saturday, my 'farewell tour'.
Got pictures of him at the house I grew up in, at my old condo, the 3 places I kept
horses, the 3 schools I went to growing up, then to the cemetery next town over
where most of my family is buried. Haven't been there since I planted my mom there
9 years ago. Got flowers at the same florist the 'family' would get flowers at for this
evolution decades ago. Have you ever yelled at a piece of granite? Emotional trip for
sure, and one of the main reasons why I was begging to get the car back 'now', I wanted
to do this. My house could sell at any minute and I'm outta here, so glad to get that trip
done and those pics taken. And to have The Ark give me a hug on every mile, 160 of them.
One stop left, the house my mom grew up in, her brother (RIP) took it over, and I have years of
great memories there. That happens Saturday if the WX holds on the return from the monthly
run to NH for cigs, alcohol and non-taxables. Picking up an old friend I haven't seen since I was
17, she lives in the same town, she'll go with me to mom's old house. Then to see another old
friend again not seen since some-teen, all with The Ark. Then the long ride back to Cape Cod,
with The Ark. Should be at least another 200 more miles of old time Cadillac style.

Life is good.

I'll add a quart of oil before I leave, stick says down a half from 'down a quart', he'll use it, lotta
miles on Saturday coming up.

Love this car.
