Does anyone know an easy way to re-install the clutch in a 1938-40 V16 without the aligning tool J-1031? Alternatively, is there anyone who can lend me aligning tool J-1031? Thanks.

V-16 is not unique here.  The spline is the same as the V-8.  I just made one from a trans input shaft. If you can't find something local with this info I can supply you a trans input shaft.  Looks of junk trans out there.

Make one out of a piece of timber, and put it in a lathe and machine the diameters of the Pilot bearing, and the ID of the Clutch spline, and you are set.

You have all the measurements you need on your transmission input shaft.

I made one from the handle of a broken pool cue a few years ago on a lathe. It worked fine.  Jim Stamper CLC#13470

I have even seen where a person got a piece f dowel, the same diameter as the Pilot Bush/bearing, and wrapped the piece with tape to increase the diameter.

I even once used a 1/2" Socket Extension and that fitted the pilot, and then just juggled the clutch spline so it was the same gap all the way around.

Meaning, no need to buy a special tool.
