Hi,

I'm getting a 1990 Eldorado registered in Ireland shortly, and they will want to see where the VIN number is stamped onto the body / chassis. The VIN number sticker on the windscreen will not be enough. I checked the engine bay, drivers door pillar and under the spare wheel in the trunk, but still can't locate it.

Any suggestions please?

Thank you :)

I just checked my 90 Deville/Fleetwood service manual and it doesn't mention any other locations but it does say that the engine sequence number is apparently the same as the VIN number.   The sequence number is 6 digits but the engines have a shorter version before that of just 3 digits,  Division, model year, and plant.

Where it shows that plate in the book looks to be facing forward near the bottom of the block basically on the belhousing.  Its terrible picture but looks like maybe its where the starter mounts?   Really not sure how visible it may be.  I know from experience there isn't much room between the side of the engine and radiator.   Also won't help if its not the original engine.

Supposedly there's a secret location known only to law enforcement authorities.

Don,
With all respect to you... here's how I see it.
That VIN was good when the car was made.
It was good for 30 years of registrations here in the states.
It was good when our customs released it.
It was good when your customs received it.
And now... AND NOW your DMV suddenly wants another #?????
Do you realize how stupid that is. There is NO MORE numbers!!
Tell those people what I said.
Maybe Roger Zimmerman in Switzerland will loan you his stamping # & letter kit.
Good Luck, Bob

I would never rely on a VIN Number that was stuck to any windscreen, as a windscreen can be replaced.

Isn't there a VIN Number stamped to the leading edge of the Dash Board, just below the windscreen on the Left side?

The Shop Manual will show where it is.

It is on the dash you can see it through the glass.    I'm thinking by 90 it may have even had a bar code on the plate.

Bruce,
He means that you can see it thru the glass, just like a new car. It's riveted to the cowl with special rivets.

Cars for the domestic market don't have a stamped VIN. Cars for exports had one stamped in the engine compartment.
You will have to let stamp the VIN locally.

G'day Bob,

It seems like the post I was replying to regarding the VIN on the Windscreen has been removed by the postee.

Well, it seems that Europeans don't see that matter like you do!
Unfortunately, I don't have a letter/number kit!

Hi Bob,

I totally agree, I'm trying not to get annoyed with the guy in the DMV I'm dealing with, as he's just some kid doing his job, and dealing with some daft rules.

So ya maybe I'll just buy a stamping kit  ;D

cheers,

Don
