I will be looking at a 1957 Eldorado Seville tomorrow, and have learned that the car may have a 390-cid engine rather than the original 365-cid engine in it.

I have been advised that many 365's were replaced by 390's over the years.

Are the engines externally identical?  What would prompt owners to replace their 365's with 390's?  Finally, would a 390 in a '57 Eldorado significantly diminish the car's value?

Thank you in advance for any input you can furnish.

G'day Brian,

The only reason anyone would substitute a 390 would probably because the original was worn out, and the later replacement was available, or just because they could.

There is a difference in the 390's, as the '59 is the same dimentions as the '57, but the '60 to '62 moved the Oil Filter to the lower right side of the Block, and used a full-flow filter.   Then the '63 390 is a different engine again.
