Hello Paul, this information from the Cadillac Master Parts List 1935-1949

Group #                                                1938 65 part #       1938 75 part #
9.0219    T       pipe       front/upper         350 3800              same
9.0221    U       pipe       rear/lower          143 4006              same
9.0222    V      pipe        intermediate       142 6188              142 5782
9.0010    W     muffler   front                   no listing               no listing   only 1939  1940  75
9.0270    X       pipe                                no listing               no listing   only 1939 1940  75
9.0012   AB      muffler   rear                   143 3995              same
9.0417   AD      end                                 142 8689             same

It seems the only difference is the intermediate pipe. I don't understand the no listing for front muffler/pipe. Does your 1938 car have only one muffler? The 1938 shop manual might clear this up. I don't have one.

Hi Tom,
My exhaust comes off the driver's side of the engine, the left side.  This was a change from 1937 where it came off the right or passenger's side.  I am attaching the drawings of the frame and the dimension chart for 1938 as well as the exhaust note.  All three of these come from the 1938 supplement to the 1937 shop manual.  Because of the near-identical (compression rations due to different heads) engine, and the frame dimensions, I assumed the 65 Series and the 75 Series shared many exhaust parts and that only the pipe in the middle of the car would be different and this appears to be the case.
One thing is curious, the drawing appears to show a right-side of engine exhaust but both the 65 and the 75 for 1938 uses a left-side exhaust.  I wonder if I can assume Cadillac recycled the drawing from 1937 for the 1938 parts book as this drawing of parts appears to be left-sided?
I do not have an original pattern exhaust system on my 6519F, someone installed something different that does not have a transverse muffler.  With that said, most of the original suspension parts for the exhaust system were abandoned in place so I can make new hangers for the exhaust from stainless.
In the 1938 exhaust supplement to the shop manual, the note ends as follows: "Expansion chambers are fitted to the exhaust pipe just ahead of the muffler on 38, 60S, 65 and 75 cars".  I wonder if the part W from your drawing is the "expansion chamber"?  Is the "expansion chamber" a resonator?
Thank you for helping me.  If you have anything else that would be of assistance, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

The drawing in the parts book is a mistake.  The only correct part of it is the brackets that are shown above it.  Looking at the 1942 parts book it shows the pipes only once and then has the brackets above labeled as 38-65 *** 40-75.  90 series is also the same except for the pipe connecting to the engine.  The exhaust exits on the opposite side of the car from the 40-60S style.  The expansion chamber is a resonator.  Don't know for sure which ones now but the exhaust suppliers seem to have all of the patterns for the 38-40 75-90 systems.

Hello Paul, I had difficulty responding due to the new spam filter. Brad is right. The pictures in the parts book are labeled for a wide range of models and they are only correct for a few of those. I think they are only intended as an aid to finding the right group number on the way to finding your specific part. Brad is right, the "expansion chamber" is a resonator. Some of the entries in group number 9.0010 were referred to as a resonator in the parts book. I still don't know why your 38-65 was not listed in group number 9.0010 and 9.0270.

I got the parts book reprint because I was in a similar situation as you. My 1940 Lasalle woodie station wagon was built on a commercial chassis. No vendor had a listing for parts for a commercial chassis. The parts book revealed most chassis parts for my Lasalle CC were the same as parts used on 40-72 and 41 to 49 75's. I ordered parts for 40-72 and I was fine.
