Hello everyone,

Perhaps someone can shed some light on a query I have regarding my '52 CDV transmission (the transmission us a '52 unit too)... Someone appears to have added a cooler at some time (this has been missing since my ownership)... see pic below ::)

My questions are as follows:
- is this a common aftermarket option?
- will/does it actually work as a concept?
- why convert it? ( she was a san francisco car, so maybe heat/traffic???)

Thanks in advance,
Shane

The original 'cooler' brought radiator water to the transmission. It was mounted on the transmission.

Thanks V63, I didn't think they used any form of oil cooling on these earlier transmissions at all ... you learn something new every day  8) I look forward to getting into the hydramatic at a later stage of the build. It's one area of the car about which I know nothing so it'll probably got to a specialist for refurb, even so I need to buy myself a manual first ::)

The first cooler design was that of bringing water to the transmission via heater hose, but I don't remember the first year it was offered 😳, 1950 did not offer it. I have a 1950 hydra magic core that needs a home🤦🏻‍♂️. 1956 1957 had that style cooler I know. 1958 up offered it in the radiator.

The first cooler design mounted between the bell housing and transmission oil pan.

Certainly No harm in leaving the Added one you have.

If I'm right, the first cooler was used for the 1955 model year on cars with two carbs.

Hi Roger:

You are correct.  This type of transmission cooler
was first used in 1955 cars with the Eldorado
engine option (dual quads). It was fed cooling
water from the radiator via hose connections.
