Quarter Panel Chrome Trim Removal Tips (76 Sedan Deville)
« on: August 17, 2021, 08:21:56 PM »
Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if any of you could provide tips for removing these chrome trim pieces (see attached photos).  Is it as simple as getting a grip and pulling hard? Or is it supposed to slide in a certain direction?  I started with the pull method but did not want to continue and break something.

I'm finally getting around to repairing those eye-sore rust spots!

Thanks,

Jonathan

The body side moldings and window belt moldings snap onto clips similar to these..the moldings on the doors also have a screw as well that is visible in the door jam. The moldings should pry off then go back on with a tap of a rubber mallet

As a safety precaution, remove the trunk cardboard and look for any fasteners that are screwed to the body side. If memory serves, there are at least two, possibly more,  fasteners retained with speed-nuts  over the wheel opening and toward the aft end of the quarter, accessible through the trunk.  In fact, you will probably find threaded fasteners at the exact location of those rust spots! The remainder are plastic fasteners as shown, in either white or blue plastic.

Yes, good call Charles, on my 76 coupe, the molding on the front fender and end of the quarter molding were mechanically fastened.

G'day Jon,

Yes, there would be at least one mechanical fastening in these pieces, especially at the rear to fully retain it in place.

There may be more, bet the Shop Manual only talks about one, and the rest are clips.

But, as with anything that is old, and had a past life, previous repairers may have added extras.
