One thing led to another, and Monday I went  to look at what I was told was a 1939 LaSalle engine. It was not out of a 1939 LaSalle. It was an early V8, one I've never seen out in the open before, and it was a monster! There's stuff missing, but the custodian just wants it gone and preferably to a hobbyist who can use it. Its manifolds are there, but they are broken. There's no starter. There's a clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. It's not known if it turns over. My guess is it will not be expensive.

It is located in Thompson, Connecticut close to Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Should you, or someone you know, be interested, PM me, and I will provide more details.

Are you talking as in its a 1910s type engine?

I found a way to post pictures. Can anyone identify the engine, what years it was used, or even if it is a Cadillac.

Chris Cummings

That looks like a 1932 or 1933 Cadillac or LaSalle engine.  You'd have to get the engine number (on a boss at the top of the crankcase next to the outboard edge of the cylinder head on the right hand side of the engine) and compare it to the tables in the front of the CLC Directory to be sure what type and year the engine is.

Chris,
He post a pic of the #. It's had to read & upside down. Maybe some wizard can flip the pic??

Too much fun is more than you can have.

Bob,

Good eye, but that's not the right number.  The owner's manual for 1933 says "The engine number is stamped on the right hand side of the crankcase near the water inlet."  The number in the photo is on top of the bell housing at the rear.

I'll get a picture if I get out to Putnam in the next week or so. Thank'sfor your help.

Chris Cummings

Were you ever able to get a photo of the engine number (curiosity is nipping at me)?

cadillac32

Number look like 30?3692. Pretty sure that is a '33 V8. Jim

It's only about 1.5 hrs from me. I can grab it and hold if anyone's interested in it, or I could just stash it till it's needed.

I must beg your indulgences. I replaced the original engine in my 1940 LaSalle, and I've been struggling to get the new engine in and running. The last time I did this was for my 1939 Ford when I was twenty. It wasn't easy then, and it wasn't any easier 61 years later. I will try to get there this week as I promised months ago and get a better idea of what it is, and how much the owner wants for it.

I have found a number on the right side on a boss just above the crankcase. It is as follows:

2002220 and it's followed by what looks like a star. I'm guessing it started life in a 1927 LaSalle. PM me if you want it, and I'll get you in contact with its owner. I have more pictures.

Chris Cummings

According to the chart (prepared by the late Carl Steig) in the front of the CLC Directory, engine numbers between 2000001 and 2003381 are for 1933 LaSalle.

Best regards,

Chris

Jamurray

You are correct, Chris, I misread the chart.
