Paul Schinnerer's V-16 Cadillacs
« on: September 19, 2021, 06:48:56 PM »
For those who follow Classic-era Cadillac history, as well as those interested in CLC history --

Two 1930 Cadillac V-16s (billed as 1931 cars, but that doesn’t matter) that were owned for years by long-time CLC member Paul Schinnerer are being offered at the RM Sotheby’s Hershey Auction this coming October 7-8.  You can read their colorful histories in Chapters 29 and 30 of my book Cadillac V-16s Lost and Found.  I have no stake or involvement in the auction.

(I'm hoping that I've worded this in such a way that the Forum's new anti-spam system doesn't kick it out again and tell me "Your registration has been denied.")

Is Paul still with us? I’ve seen the burgundy car many times at SoCal events over the years.

Paul is 97 and quite with it.  Give him a call.

Best regards,

Chris

I met Paul at Doug Houston's home in 1965. He'd come to visit Doug and also attend Carnival of Cars put on each year in Detroit by the CCCA. Also attending the show were Stan Squires in a fenderless 1937 V-16 business coupe and a 1939 green V-16 coupe with an additional trunk behind the regular trunk. It was driven in by a tall Dutchman and quickly surrounded by spectators for the rest of the afternoon. (The owner was Ron Van Gelderen.)

About one year ago I talked with Paul by telephone, he sounded very good, said he was 96, and hoped to drive his 30 V-16 when he is 100 years old. He did not specify which one. By the looks of things, maybe he has decided to sell before then.

Paul sold his V-16s privately a year or two ago.  The buyer has consigned them at the RM Sotheby's event.

Barry, that green V-16 business coupe had been owned originally by the infamous goat gland doctor, John Brinkley.

Chris, I'd have mentioned that fact, but I was having a senior moment about remembering the Dr.'s name. I figured someone (like you) would add to my narrative. Thanks. Barry (Oh, I think the original color of the car was red and his wife couldn't stand it and after he died, had the car painted the green shade.)

Exactly right, Barry.  Minnie Brinkley didn't care for attention.

Hello Ron

Sorry to read of Paul's death. His car collection was diverse and spectacular. I had the pleasure of visiting his home and talking LaSalle. I hope his family is well. He was a great Ambassador.

So sad to hear of Paul's death.  He was a terrific friend, a font of knowledge about old Cadillacs, and a wonderful tour guide to the early days of the Cadillac-LaSalle Club and the old car hobby.  A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a radio expert and ham operator.  He sure wanted to make it past 100.

Godspeed, Paul!
