Y'all have such dirty minds, its why I love you all....

I've had this issue with The Ark since Day 1. Out on cold days and nights with the windows closed and the heat on, when I take my foot off the gas coming up to a light or slowing for a highway exit I'd get a momentary blast of monoxide into the cabin. Phil Cobb said this happened when these cars were new sometimes, if a seal/gasket (who knew there were seals/gaskets) in the trunk area failed. The tail pipe does not extend past the rear bumper, as all modern cars do now. So you have all those fumes swirling in a vortex under the car, into the trunk, into the cabin. Its quite possible there's a seal and/or gasket missing, damaged in The Ark's trunk, corrosion is a possibility, maybe there's a small hole somewhere in the trunk, I never looked that closely. Restoring the trunk area is on page 5 of The Ark's "to do" list.

But it bother's me. And we still have several events in October and November, its getting cold, the windows will be closed and the heat on.

Phil said the easy fix for now is to get the tail pipe past the rear bumper. So today after a dentist appointment we headed over to the fabulous "Lou's Custom Exhaust" in Hyannis for a visit with Marc Primavera, exhaust genius. He's worked on The Ark before, he and his company are on the showboard. They do all of Hyannis Vintage Auto's exhaust work, they do insane World Of Wheels show car work, and they'll put a new, cheaper than dealer cat on your daily driver.

Told Mark the issue and what Phil said, he brought The Ark right in and went to work. Cut off the tip of the pipe on the current resonator, got another piece of pipe, cut kinda long, and bent it 5-6 times until he was happy with the fit. Length? We found a length he said would work and that I was happy with. Welded it on (eh Marc? That new gas tank has a drip at the vent pipe, just FYI. 'yeah I can smell it'. Lights the torch...)

Took him less than 30 minutes to pre-fab and install, another $90 receipt for The Ark's folder, and
we were on our way home. Really hope this works. Marc said if it doesn't bring The Ark back, he'll put on his stethoscope.... Its how he found the exhaust leak 4 years ago, the pipe off the left side manifold where it connected to the other pipe going aft had a hole on top where you couldn't see it, welded it up, no problem since.

When I got home and docked The Ark in The Lair my exhaust fume elimination system had to be updated. Shortened up the ducting for The Ark's longer... thing. Gave me a chance to tighten up the clamp to the floor and the clamp that holds the ducting in place, that's been loosening for a bit.

Very cool show in Hyannis this Saturday (Kalmus Beach, cruise down town to Main Street, back to Kalmus Beach for the food trucks and a park'n gab), MUST GET TO GILLETTE STADIUM THIS MONTH and those period correct incandescent headlights will get a workout coming home late, the Red Barn show is on now for late October, and the Rebels & Rods in Plymouth are going to keep having events weekly on Sunday mornings until the snow flies.

Your exhaust extension looks nice BUT you will
get dinged for it at a GN judging.

Also -- YOU NEED to get those holes in the trunk
floor fixed!!  Don't want to lose a member to CO.
Besides, we could never replace the "ARK's MOM".

And that tip needs to have a bevel cut on the end. It would be a lot more pleasing to your eyes as well as the function you are looking to get.

LMAO. That's got to be "up" there among your most notable and quotable Kraynick quotes, (KQs). But my favorite of yours was; tranny mount, new shaft in, and my rear end" « on: May 17, 2021, 01:15:57 AM » That title should get some clicks, LOL!  Hahahahahaha! Fortunately for us (and the Moderators), yes that was actually a Cadillac post by the Kraynick! I am here Doll, slaving away on Lexi She has been a bad girl lately so time to heat up her backside. Get your minds out of the gutter, talkin' about a welding repair back there! Just sayin'... Anyhow, might even do a post on it or even flirt with a Self Starter article. Too much to go into right now, but glad to hear that the Ark's "thing" has been lengthened and that your health will be protected from CO  fumes. Enjoy what is left of this year's driving season. Such a beautiful car !  Long live The Ark !
Now I am curious as to what the exhaust tip looked liked when these cars rolled off the showroom floor.

It was level with the bottom edge of the bumper, cut at an angle not to be seen.

Cadillac exhaust is not to be seen or heard.

Fins the edge is "correctly" way further back than that.

AND problem solved. Had The Ark out all day running errands then later out for teaching.
Around town lots of lights, up to route 6 for a good boot down an exit, no monoxide in the cabin
with the windows closed.

Nice.

Time for bed, Kalmus show/cruise in the morning. Get your cars out there my northern peeps, time
grows short.

   Hi Laurie,

That's great news about stopping the exhaust smell. Something that hasn't been mentioned yet about that pipe is that it will be easier to crush it if the rear of your car drops down when going through a dip or into a driveway. The pipe can be caught between the bumper and the ground.
If you have it cut back slightly and at an angle, then if it hits the ground, there's no bottom on the pipe to be pushed up and pinch off the exhaust flow. You can still have it extend past the bumper slightly, but just the top of the pipe. The bottom of the pipe should be cut so it's just ahead of the bumper, if that makes sense to you.

I don't know where your leak is but the original configuration of the exhaust system isn't the problem.
Make sure your trunk is sealed up amd you don't have any other leaks in the system. The original slash cut on the tailpipe looks the best in my opinion.
