Adding ZDDP to your motor oil can be a double edged sword, do not do so in a willy-nilly fashion ---

Too much zinc can be as bad as not enough ---

BTW --- Mobil 1 15W-50 contains 1200 PPM

During the period 1975 up we all used oil for our 1975-79 Cadillac Devilles, Eldorados, etc with high amounts of zinc in the oils and this did not harm the cat convertors made in those years so since the zinc has been reduced much further down these days in the conventional oils so why should they harm these same convertors now. I have 247,000 miles on my 76 Deville and the factory cat is still in the car and working very well.  Under these circumstances I decided to begin using Valvoline VR1 Racing oil, 10w-30 conventional motor oil and the engine could not sound and run any better and smoother; think about the old convertors were made much different than they are now, possibly stronger and less platinum, etc.  EAM

I am not sure if any you know, but Castrol now has a 20W50 oil strictly developed for classic cars. It has a high amount of ZDDP in it and it cost far less than other oils such as Valvoline VR1 racing oils and Lucas Classic oil.

What I like is that the rating is SJ on the seal, so it's pretty old spec. I happened to find it at Walmart and picked up a few quarts.

The price is pretty cheap too, it's only $4.68 a quart so if one likes to use a thicker oil, this one might be for you.

Is it available in 10w-30 viscosity; and will it work just as good as Valvoline VR1, 10w-30?

Its website only states 20W50 for now. I am sure they will come out with a 10W30 in the future. I'll email their tech line and ask because you honestly can't beat the price, and Castrol as we all know makes great oil.

I use 15W50 Mobil 1 oil in my 64 Cadillac but switch back to a10W40 at times and I don't have any drivability issues at all. I used to get some slight lifter tick from low oil pressure and the only thing that helped was adding a heavier weight oil. I probably have some lower bearing wear and oil pump wear, but so far every time I take my 64 out for a drive, I don't get low oil pressure any more. Adding a Zinc additive helped too because the engine would tick and tap without it especially if I don't add the Rislone ZDDP bottle to the crankcase.

Now with this particular Castrol oil, you might not even need to add any additional bottles of Zinc additive while saving extra money at the same time,

I found out from their customer service person that they make or will make 10w-30 GTX conventional oil but that and the 20w-50 viscosity will need added Zinc; there's only about 600 PPM in them while the Valvoline VR1 has 1400 PPM of zinc.  So far my choice is Valvoline VR1, 10w-30!   EAM
