So fall is gone. All the leaves (except for oaks and beeches) have fallen. We have  had some freezes with some vicious winds, and a little snow. But today was drop dead beautiful: Sunshine, blue skies, temperatures all the way into the 60s. It was a great opportunity to run my car before serious snow, salt, and cold.

I went into the garage, opened the doors, and did the usual pre-check: air in tires fine, oil level where it should be. Didn't check brake fluid. (There isn't any.)

I opened the car door and turned on the master electric switch. Sat in the driver's seat, advanced the throttle very slightly, and pulled the choke out full. Pressed the starter button. It is a six volt system, so the starter did its familiar, slow urrhh, urrhh for almost a three quarter turn of the flywheel (estimated), Then, vroom! Not exactly a Maserati sports car sound, but more of a nice, smooth, I'm-happy-to-be-running burble.

I kept the choke out about one-third of maximum for the first mile or so.The car has a semi-automatic choke, but it is disconnected. I find when it is engaged, the car runs a little too rich, even when the semi-automatic choke is set in the leanest position. I suspect that it is a result of the carburetor running a little too rich for the local altitude. (I am at 4000', low by western standards, but still high enough to influence carburetor prformance.)

The car ran beautifully. I had the ride control set on medium, as the roads have lots of patches and bumps. Steering is tight and, at speed, feels comfortably light. I drove into town, and ran past a speed checker. The speed limit was 25 mph; my speedometer read 25 mph and the speed checker registered 24 mph. Most gratifying. The speedometers on most old cars I have had were notorious liars.

Got home an hour or so later and parked the car in the garage. Checked for oil leaks. The engine has two breather tubes, Both blow a little oil, with the one on the right putting out slightly more than the left. I concluded she is just marking territory.

It was a good run. Got lots of waves, some stares, lots of being ignored by Philistines who aren't into old cars and some thumbs up from the local police. A totally fun afternoon.

Very nice!!

What a great view from the driver's seat.
Enjoy life - it has an expiration date.

I know the feeling. Nothing like it. 40 mph in my LaSalle.... cruising along winding two lane back roads. Pure pleasure.  Enjoy your beautiful Cadillac.
