When the gear lever is in park, and Neutral I think, the vacuum is stopped from going anywhere, but in Reverse and any of the Drive positions, the port is opened, and the vacuum continues to the Parking Brake Disengagement Diaphragm.This then releases the parking brake pawl, releasing the parking brake automatically. It started in the 1960 models, and continued on ever since.Bruce.
