Since Lincoln is bringing back the Zephyr sedan, will Cadillac bring back the LaSalle sedan?

They could call it the "LTS", LaSalle Touring Sedan, LTC, LSC, you get the idea.

Looks like cars with names are for the lower tier GM brands or trucks.

Just another fad, copying the Euro car models, it will pass.

The marquee will always still have a name.

Notice the show cars always have a slick name, not some silly letters ? Like who would remember the "XLR" (Evoq)?

"Cadillac" will always be around, the name is still prestigious and they invented the infamous tailfin. Quality, luxury, performance and safety features were always their "bread & butter", the styling is the icing on the cake.

I almost forgot value.

The name brings bad back bad memories when FOMOCO slapped the name on a 1980 Ford Fairmont.  Front end looks like a BMW in rear end looks like a Ford Fairmont Thunderbird.

You need to remember that the people who are putting alphabet soup manes on Cadillac are the same ones who scuttled General Motors over the past 40 years or so. If they like the designations, thats what itll be.

As far as the resurrection of LaSalle goes, Id never put money on it. It was because LaSalle outsold Cadillac by a factor oof 3 to 1 in 1940. Nicholas Dreystadt, General Manager of Cadillac foresaw a replay of the 1932 scenario of Pontiac killing the main line of Oakland, because Pontiac outsold the slats out of Oakland. Because of its sales superiority, They pulled the plug on LaSalle. Dreystadt feared for the Cadillac name to be lost.

As we all know, the LaSalle name still carries a lot of prestige, even with people who never even saw one, nor were living in the days that LaSalle was built.

The Zephyr is selling extremely well (much better than anticipated)in its first year, so what is Lincoln planning to do on the 2007 models? Put a larger, more powerful engine in (understandable even in times of increasing gas prices, I guess)and CHANGE THE NAME.  Its going to be the MKZ (according to Lincoln, this is to be pronounced MarkZ, not M K Z)which they say will fit in with their new model designation system which began with their F150 run through Saks Fifth Avenue called the MKLT. OK, but they still have the Navigator and the Town Car.  Maybe theyre going to be changed to the MKNAV, and MKTOWN. And they already had the MKLT when the Zephyr was introduced with a lot of hoopla including having FoMoCo scout around for the finest 1936 Zephyr extant with a budget of $100,000.00 to purchase it, which they did and then displayed it with the new one at auto shows.

I was pleased to see the revival of the distinguished Zephyr nameplate, but apparently Lincoln has now fallen under the influence of the same consultants who advised Cadillac that all models must have "alphabet soup" names.  According to the trade publications, the Zephyr nameplate will be dropped at the end of this year and the model will be redesignated as the "MKZ".
