GM has introduced the Gen IV Vortec V8 on its Envoy Denali SUVs.  It features a design called Displacement On Demand (DOD), which in effect works basically like the 1981 Cadillac V8-6-4 engine, with the biggest difference being it just alternates between being a V8 and a V4. It works using a sophisticated engine controller which monitors numerous factors, including oil temperature, engine speed (rpm), coolant temperature and transmission gear state to help determine the operating mode of the engine. Hopefully the have better luck now then they did 24 years ago.

Doesnt the Chrysler Hemi cut down to four cylinders?  I cant wait for the factory authorized 2006 Chrysler 300 C SRT four door convertible.

Yes, the Chryslwe Hemi uses this system as well.

The one used by GM is made by Eaton Corporation, the same people that supplied the hardware for the Cadillac V-864. But, there are differances in the hardware. The new system uses a moveable plate in the valve lifter instaed of the solenoids in the rocker arms. As far as I know, the Chrysler system is nearly identical to the DOD system GM uses.
