I was once told, or maybe I read, that early 4 cylinder Cadillacs sometimes would break out on fire under the hood.  Then a firewall was introduced as a remedy.
Can anyone shed light on this?  Did this really happen?

I cannot. However, it seems to plausable for there not to be some merit in it. Given that necessity is the mother of invention, I can see such things happening, the need arose, the invention then occurs.  I wait for more insite with you. Art

It is also probably why they thought of moving the motor up from underneath to the front.

Just imagine a one lunger catching fire, and not hnowing about it until the seat under you started getting hot.

  My guess is that the term goes back to the age of the steam engines.
