Does anyone know of an air cleaner adapter that fits on the 1959 Carter 4 barrel? The diamter of the neck is smaller than most 5 1/8 adapters. I want to put on a custom air cleaner on the stock carb but all the offered adapters are 5 1/8 and are too big to fit around the neck to seal properly.

Gday Rob,

There has to be a zillion of those adaptors lying around in peoples workshops.   I have at least two.

They are plastic, and come with most of the chrome accessory aftermarket air cleaners and most people just dont use them as they have the later model carbies.

They raise the air cleaner around 3/4 above the original base.

If you cant find any, I can send you one of mine.

Thank you for your response. I bought a standard 4 barrel adapter kit by Spectre. The kit included the standard 5 1/8 riser but that standard riser is way to large in diameter for my carter carb. Are you sure yours would fit the diameter?

Jegs has one, I have the page bookmarked but it is not handy.

I want to get one for my 66 Carter carb so I can use an open air breather. Look under air filters, chrome engine dress up kits stuff, etc. I think it is a Mr. Gasket product.

Thanks for the info! I bet my carter has the neck size of 4 7/32 not the 5 1/8. I will have to check into it.

Yeah,

The Carter has the 4 and change diameter.

I stumbled across that adapter at Jegs looking at modified parts stuff.

We are a fun bunch of guys and we have a good time, Ive been told the 429 air breather is very restrictive, my 66 327 Vette had a factory Holley carb and an open air breather, nothing looks better than a chrome top on an open breathing air filter.

If you have a 472 or a 500 you can warm them up a little bit internally, the judges will never know.

Just to confirm with you, the Carter in 1959 has the diameter of 4 7/32 on the neck? or is it another odball size like 4 1/2? Sory for all the questions no one seems to have the right answer for me here in town.

Rob,

I measured my 66 Carter carb once, not sure what the size is, it did match the spec. size for that adapter though. I reckon all the Carters from that era were all the same diameter.

Just measure yours to make sure.

Nothing better than an open air breather to wake up the big Cadillac beast engine, let it breathe. My 66 & 67 429s are 340hp & 490 ft. lb. torque, not too shabby. Try to buy a car today with an engine like that.

Gday Rob,

The one I have in my hot little hand has a small ID of 4 5/16 and a large OD of 5 for the Holleys and later carbies.   It is 3/4 high.

I tried it on a 55 Carter WCFB and a 58 Rochester 4CG and a 62 Rochester Marine 4CG and it fits perfectly.

It is yours if you want it.   Wont cost much to post as it is plastic, but I am sure that there will be some closer to you than here in Tasmania.

P.S.   Trust me, it will fit.

That would be great! I can pay you via Paypal. Or I can pay you in other ways. I have had a hell of a time getting a straight answer on this one. Oddly on my 1968 Cadillac it was never an issue.
