Does anyone know if the 1931-1937 V12 engines are interchangeable within these years?  i.e.-would a 37 model year match up to a 31 transmission and bellhousing in a 31 car?
In the listing of technicians there is no one named who specializes in this engine.  Is there anyone who has worked on these I could talk to?
Thank you,
Mike

Try either Carl L. Steig of San Leandro, CA, or Ted Raines, also of California. Both have restored several V-12 engined cars. Their phones are in the Directory.

Hello,
from the 1935 edition of Motors factory parts price lists

* 1931-33 370-A, -B and -C cylinder block, with fitted pistons, rings & pins was rated $94.50
* 1934-35 370-D identical part was $98.40

It means the part is not the same and will certainly feature different casting numbers. Unfortunately my book does not show parts numbers.
Of course it does not mean a later engine wont mechanically fit an earlier transmission or engine compartment.
Hope this can help.

But were the blocks not separate units from the crank case? That would be where the trans bolts up.

  My 9th edition Hollander (1940) says 31-35 are the same and 36-37 are the same. From Cadillac parts book Crankcase part numbers 1091393(1931),1096001(1932-33)1096285(1934-35),1096518(1936) sorry I dont have 1937. Warren

Thank you, gentlemen, for your assistance.
I now have some good leads to follow.

I believe that all the V-12s have the same pattern for the bell housing. There are differences in the crankcases. The 31s have no fuel pump. The 32/33 has a float for the oil level. The 34 and later has a dip stick. Hope this helps. Bob
