Hi,
I want to replace the fluid of my 59 SDV hydramatic - the manual says ATF heavy duty, what does this translate to in modern terms?

Either Dexron II or III is OK. There was quite a discussion on this a couple of years ago. I emailed AC Delco at that time and was told Dexron transmission fluids are backwards compatible all the way back to the type A that was used in the 50s.

I just checked the extra bottles in my garage - Dexron III.

Hi I just use the synthetic ATF in my Hydramatics. It makes them shift smoother and better. Also the trans will run cooler!!!around 20 less on a real hot day.

Hi, I wonder, if Dexron III is a improved verson  of Dexron II, why do they still manufacture and sell Dexron II ?
