Test drove a 2007 GS Convertible GT (retractable metal top similar to Lexus/Mercedes) today, nice V6 performance, reasonably priced fully loaded ($32K).  1/4 the price of an XLR.  Only downside is rear bucket seats.

Pontiac G6. That price would be somewhat less than 1/2 the price of the XLR and 1/3 the price of the XLR-V, both of which, unlike the Volvo C70 and Volkswagen Eos, would not be considered by Pontiac to be its competition..and the XLR doesnt have a backseat at all. As for drawbacks, did you see its luggage compartment (probably rear glove compartment would be more accurate) when the top is down? It may not be any worse than other current retractable hardtops, but that isnt saying much.

Last time I checked, convertibles are not practical cars. They are fun cars. If you must own one it pays to have another daily driver.
I say this as the former owner of a convertible, which came in handy for a purpose other than fun only once. I put a queen size matress in/on it for fifteen miles.
