Say folks,

What style carpet came in the 56 coupe originally?  Loop or cut pile?  And what would be the best for a driver car?  Also, has anyone ordered a carpet from Kanter, and if so, how are they?  might I find a better one elsewhere? Are they molded to fit?

Thank you

Jim Jordan CLC # 5374

56 carpet is a small, really tight loop.  I dont know about Kanter, but I got the replacement carpet along with all cloth and vinyl for my 56 Series 62 Coupe from SMS in Portland, OR.  It is really terriffic!  Properly sewn and bound edges.  I couldnt be more pleased.

For any car which came with loop carpet, or would even look halfway decent with it, I would go with loop replacement.  I have never been able to find cut pile carpet that is anything but the same junk that they put in newer cars.  It makes things rough for those of us who have 70s cars with luxury shag.  Even carpet dealers who claim to be factory replacement specialists or whatever will send you the same thing.  Ive asked for samples from several companies, with no luck.  I have the cut pile carpet in two of my cars, and it doesnt look horrible, but it doesnt look original either.

I believe this was called Roxpoint, or some derivitive thereof. Been years since I have my 56 Sixty Special, so I could be wrong.

The original carpets are in my 56 convertible. As has been already said, theyre a (very fine) hooked pile, and with a foam rubber backing. Whwn I get the car on the road some day, Im gonna be extremely careful that I, or nobody else gets their booties on those carpets. Theyre still like new.

Doug, I have a suggestion for you. Buy some towels in the same color family(etc, gray interior, gray towels) and put them over the carpet that you want to keep clean. You will be surprised at the amount of dirt that you will shake-out every two days.TIP, Buy several sets so you can have some in use as you wash and dry the dirty-ones.

Good luck,JIM

Towels are good, but even better are ordinary bathroom mats (carpets). I buy these for every car that I own (when new) in the same color as the existing carpet. The good thing about these is that they can be cut to size and also can be washed and dried in an automatic washer/dryer.  They also soak up wet snow and slush.

The last ones I bought at "Bed, Bath & Beyond" but should be available at any bath store. Cost is minimal and color selection is excellent.

According to the 56 specification manual, the Serie 62 coupe and coupe de Ville had a "Nylon fine loop pile". The more luxurious models, like Eldos and 60S had a "Rayon filament loop pile" which is less fine that the carpet for lesser models.

Hope that it can help.
