Anyone know how to remove one from a 1940 Cadillac series 72?

If its the vacuum antenna, the top nut is removed, with the plastic stanchion, and any outer hardware. The lead-in is removed by unscrewing the vacuum fitting, and the little shield can where the lead-in enters. The lower hose fitting is also unscrewed. Youll have to drop the entire antenna assembly down and lift off the plastic angle fitting and washer that are beneath the cowl sheet metal. Then, you should be able to lift the antenna assembly up and out through the hole in the cowl. The antenna cylinder passes through a couple of rubber bushings in two body braces.

Dont get tough with the antenna assembly. The top part of it is fiber, and sort of frail.

Notwithstanding what our guru said, I was unable to get my 1941 60S cowl antenna out, and it was just hanging in the car with the top bezel undone. I had to cut the framework behind the cowl to get it loose. This is the way Claus says to remove it. (The antenna specialist.) I think its the same antenna. The small diameter one. In any case, do like Doug says. Dont pull or push hard on anything. Good luck. If you can get it out without cutting, it will certainly be a lot easier than using a dozen or so cutting wheels on my Dremel tool to get through the brace behind the cowl. There is a rubber (I think) cushion that you might have to split to let the antenna move up to where you can see if it will come out.

If you have to butcher things in the body to get the antenna out, how dyou suppose they got it IN?

 When I got my 41-60S in 1956, the original antenna was gone, and a cheap swivel ball antenna was in its place. I ordered a new antenna kit from Cadillac parts, and they sent a fender mount antenna. Thats what they serviced it with. Im not sure why the early design antenna was used on the 60S only that year. When it was in good shape, it was actually a better antenna than the later large cylinder model. I later blocked off and leaded the old antenna hole.

When I got the kit, I was a bit distressed about the installation, but there it was: the grommet for running the antenna lead-in and vacuum hoses through the firewall.

There will always be eternal mysteries.
