48 Cadillac - what is this?

I thought I could attach a picture, but it appears not. While looking under the hood of a 48 Cadillac the other day, I noticed what looks like an electric pump (it has a domed cover over the eletrical terminals) mounted just above the steering column on the drivers side. This is obviously factory equipment, but I couldnt determine any puepose.

Just thought I would add, that although the car was crushed almost flat, the gravel shields on the rear doors indicate it was a 60 Special.

I believe that is a hydraulic pump:  possibly for power windows or other heavy duty accessories on this car.  It is driven by a standard Delco starter motor, I have seen these on several old cars.  Dont know how to imbed the image you have, but it can be seen at this web address:
