[I posted this message on the general message forum by mistake, so my apologies for the double posting here.]

After a few years of benign neglect, I opted to get my air conditioning system working again by having the compressor and dryer replaced, a system flush, and a new charge of R-12 two days ago. I think the system is working correctly but I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the dash vent air temperature should be when the blower is set on Auto High. It seems to blow pretty cold but I wonder if it should be colder. Id answer this question myself but my shop manual is in storage.

And now for an even dumber question: what is the difference between Auto Medium and Auto High? The blower seems to be running at the same speed on both settings.

Thanks,
Erik

Erik,
Buy a shop manual for your car.  The section on AC will give you a graph and a table of temperatures to expect under most of the conditions you will encounter.  The temperature control system is intended to provide air which has enough temperature difference between the set point on your temperature dial and the actual conditions as measured by the in car sensor, to either heat or cool the car to the temperature you set.  My 76 in southern Texas (same system as yours) typically tries to get below 50 degrees when the temperatur outside is over 90.  With Auto- the fan will respond to the temperature control system if it can. TYhaat means when it is moderate outside, and the AC has the capacity to control the temperature the fan speeds up to reach the set point then slows down as it reaches the desired temperature.  On High, the fan is at its fixed high speed.  During the Tuscon Summer, there would be no difference, since I am sure at 115 degrees outside, your system is more than maxed out.
Good luck
Greg

Erik:

If you set the system to "Auto High" that's the modren equivalent of recirculation.
In othe words, no outside air and it should get plenty cold.  Remember, these systems
take about 4 pounds of R-12 to fully charge.  I just worked on mine over the weekend.
Most "cans" of R-12 are just 12 ounces so you have to allow for that.

By all means,  buy a Shop Manual as the other writer suggested - it's a great wealth of
info for the price.  Mike
