My understanding is that an alternator must have electricity to make electricity. A generator can produce electricity without electrical source. Correct?
If correct will I ruin my freshly rebuilt generator by running in my engine without a voltage regulator in the system?  -(sling the lead out of it).

Whats wrong with hooking up the generator as normal, and running it in?

If you want to run the generator to run in the bushing, dont connect it to anything. That way, it wont run without load and face possible damage.

Thanks Doug,
This is a body off restoration. I have everything chassiswise restored and wanted to run the engine before body is reinstalled. I need generator installed for water pump pulley.
I thought possibly the generator would charge maximum without any regulation.
