ok from surfing the net i see there are 2 331 engines    49 too 54 had different bellhousing ??and then the 331 55 engine had a flat back engine am i correct here folks help me out????

my engine threw a rod   so i am to understand i will need a 55 to 57 ?? engine ???

Not sure exactly what you are asking? But 1949 thru 1953 were the same. 1954 and 55 changed, same 331 engine, but got rid of the back side bell housing, and changed the distributor. 1956 up changed again.
