Hi Guys
Can anyone help me please?  Having recently purchased my 1963 Series 62 Convertible I found that the heater pipes had been removed and  the ooutlets simply  connected to each other therby bypassing the heater altogether.

I have now re-established the hoses and the heater work just fine, however the blower motor will not switch off, even when the two large levers are moved to the central (OFF) position the blower continues to wlow when in the auxillary  or run/ignition positions.  Surely this cannot be right.

Under the hood I also found four vacuum hoses/pipes.  I have found a home for two of them (One to the A/C unit inside the inner fender (passengers side) and a second to a vacuum unit fixed to the main trunking of the blower motor, however I believe that a second hose should also go to this same vacuum unit but the central metal pipe or spout has broken off.  Am I correct, and if so can I  possibly repair this connection?  Also where do the other two vacuum pipes/hoses go.

Any help would be appreciated please.

I can supply  photos of under the hood if necessary.

Many thanks
Barry

You need a 1963 Shop Manual AND the Operator's Manual, both readily available from several different reprint outfits and often the originals can be found on eBay (as well as the reprints).  They will tell you where things go and that the fan is working correctly.

Be very wary of that heater core you just reconnected, they are usually disconnected because they are leaking.  Sometimes the leak will not be obvious until one day your realize your carpet on the passenger side is soaked from coolant running down near the inside of the firewall and onto the carpet or carpet backing.  The squishing sound someone's foot will make on the passenger side will come as a surprise and the coolant will make a real mess of the carpet.  Then you will also understand why you have had to add coolant to the radiator every so often. Often the leaks start rather slow and just keep getting worse.

The Shop Manual will also guide you through the heater core replacement procedure.    ;D
Good luck with your car.

In some Cadillacs it is normal for the fan to never shut off.  I think there is a tread here somehwere with some details and theories on why they did that.  The only reason I can think of where a good heater core would have been bypassed is like on a car I was just working on when I put the new engine in I didnt have enough hose left to hook it up and the stores were closed, since it was summer I figured I would get to it later.  Later turned out to be 4 months later when it got cold and I need the heat.  I would guess that 98% of the time its because of a leak, your only hope is the leak was in the hose so they just made the loop with the 'good' hose which was in as poor of shape as the one that failed.

Hi TJ H

Many thanks for the reply, only just looked at it as I've been away for a few days.

Pleased to say that car has been standing and engine running since replacing hoses to heater core and absolutely no signs of leaks, so I guess I was one of the 2% that possible had a problem with the hoses and it was simply re-routed for convenience at that particular time.  So that's good news for me.

Interested to hear about the FAN MOTOR running all the time by design, I have just removed the dash top cover, firstly to get the radio out.  Although it works OK, I am unable to recieve any signals due to it beimg manufactured for the US market, but we have a locall Radio repair man who specialises in  conversions,  and even modifying to AM?FM Stereo.
Anyway, was hoping to try top trace wiring of fan motor switch to see if there was a bad switch or connection, but I wont now look too hard if the permanent ON mode is possible.

So many thanks  :)

Regards

Barry :)
