Do you use tilt/telescopic?

Just curious, do you adjust your tilt/telescopic every time you drive?  I use the tilt every time I get in and out but I never adjust the telescopic part.  All the Cadillacs I have owned have had t/t (when it was available) but I always leave the wheel pushed in.  Being 6ft 248lbs, I'm not big but not small either, I find it more comfortable pushed in.  All my cars have the seat moved all the way back but in the Eldorado, if I pull the wheel out, it is literally touching my chest. 

About the only time the telescopic gets used is when I have one at a car event and someone wants to know what the lever on top of the column is for.

At one point all the cars I regularly drove had the same tilt mechanism so I did tilt it to get in and out but now even though I think everything has tilt the mechanisms are so different from each other and not as convenient to use so I know I don't use it on the newer cars very often.  I don't think I use it on the Eldo but maybe I still do and just don't realize it. 

Telescope I used to run all the way out because I liked the seat down and back as far as it would go but its possible that over the last several years I have had to adjust it in a little.  Pretty sure that is because the car has got smaller with age, no way I have got larger in the almost 30 years I have had the same car.


I suspect those features maybe got used more if say a husband and wife regularly shared the same car back in the daily driving days?  Kinda like how newer cars have presets for the seat and mirrors and pedals and everything else?  Once a car becomes a classic it seems much less common to have different drivers.

I use the telescopic every once in awhile when I adjust my seat. I ALWAYS use the tilt to get in and out. I'm a bit over 6'5", and have the seat as far back as it'll go (and I had re-mounted my seat to the rear set of holes, as per the body manual) and I have it tilted back as well. I'll change the amount of tilt from time to time, and I'll adjust the tilt/ telescopic as well. I LOVE that feature!

One of the main reasons I bought the 1968 DeVille I did is because it does not have a Tilt and Telescope wheel or for that matter almost anything else. If the Turn signal mechanism breaks on a T
  and T wheel a replacement is unobtainable. Also 54 years later 99% of the other options do not work anymore anyways and I have found the least expensive part of these cars is the mechanical stuff the options and trim is through the roof. One Mans Opinion

The 67-68 Boyne signal switch for T-T columns does wear out, and it was a bad design. However the Boyne switch on the non tilt column also wears out. For now there are reproductions, but that may not last, and then the non tilt column is in the same situation as a T-T.
Some 67-68 non tilt did use a Delco switch which is more durable than the Boyne switch.

The 62-66 T-T signal switches are still around and I have rebuilt many of those. And the 69 and up T-T switches hold up well.

Usually the biggest issue of a badly worn 67-68 T-T switch is the cancelling cam will not lock, and the weight of the lever can cause the LH cornering lamp to come on at times. These issues one can typically live with considering the advantages of a T-T column.

Us shorter owners may have less need for those
options, they have only caused me problems.  One
tilt wheel got so wobbly it affected everything.
Problems are likely past 200,000 miles.

I managed to swap out all the telescope columns
here, could not find a non tilt to put in the

Cadillac Tim's assessment is spot on. I have purchased a new reproduction non T&T Boyne switch for the shelf even though the original is fine. I also would say that my '68 has the six way seat, I am 5' 8" and 180 lbs. and I find the non T&T wheel pretty much perfect for me.

Hey Bruce my name is Jonathan I was told to come to you as you were a specialist in this field I just bought a true survivor 1981 El Dorado baritz 6.0. The issue I'm having is that it starts but does not run I have zero fuel pressure and I have no power at the pump, I have good ground but no power. Also I noticed that the relays and fuses have seem to be replaced, also after I bought it I noticed that there are two spare ecms in the trunk and the ECM in the car is just hanging down. Also I noticed if I if I turn the car off and then leave it overnight the ECM continues to run and it'll kill my battery I'm trying to give you as much information as I can think of to hopefully pick your brain a little bit any information would help thank you very much. I tried to direct message you but your inbox was full thanks again

Just to chime in here my72 Eldo that I bought in 71 had the T & T. For what ever reason I used both features almost constantly, and 45 years and 500,000 miles later when the car was sold, both features still worked perfectly. I believe it is how you treat these mechanisms that determine their longevity. Why did use the T & T so much? I was on the road nearly constantly and liked to change positions and orientations behind the wheel every 100 miles or so.

I think one thing that caused a lot of wear in the tilt is if the driver used the steering wheel as a grab handle to get in and or out of the car.  It doesn't seem to happen as much on cars but you often saw it in the trucks where people were grabbing the wheel to pull themselves up into the seat. 


And Johnathan we do see your messages and are trying to help you.  Everyone here is pretty laid back and is willing to cut new people some slack not knowing general forum protocols.  Your first post tagging onto an older post with a similar question on more or less the same car was alright and is somewhat common.  Posting the same question in your own thread is the right way especially if your question isn't identical to the thread you tagged onto.

So you were good there other than you went into the general section rather than the technical section but MANY people make that mistake so especially for a new person easy mistake to make so again no problem.  Where the bad form starts is when you duplicate your question again in the tech section then AGAIN in 2 completely unrelated threads like this one and the limo one.  Getting off topic like that makes a mess out of the threads so the original poster may not be able to get the information they wanted and it makes it really messy for future people trying to search for old topics to find the info they are looking for. 

I think a good example of what a mess this is making is it appears you are not able to keep track of all the places you are asking the same questions.  I know I and at some others have tried to help you but you so far have not replied to any of those.

It also tends to turn people off when you don't give it some time.  Yes there are times people get replies within minutes but most of the time it takes at least days.  The ones that happen in minutes is just a lot of luck that the right person read it at the right time when they had some answers and the time to communicate them right then.

I specialize in the 76-79 EFI, and the 79 Eldo (that
I have owned since 1995).  But the 80-81 are a
complete redesign of engine and EFI, I have no
