Title: Spam from Board?
Post by: Brad Hemingson CLC #18437 on November 27, 2012, 09:55:41 AM
I got this from Car Freak <carfreak59@live.com>

"Hello,

I am working on a discussion point for the CLC Winter Board meeting regarding the Forum Software.

Part of my research is how many persons who post with a CLC member number in their profile have their dues paid up to date versus dues which are expired.

I notice you are not listed in the 2013 Directory, is your membership current?  (dues paid)

If yes, did you renew after the Directory deadline date of August 31?

If no, is there a reason why you didn't renew?

Has anyone (CLC Forum Moderators) ever questioned whether your CLC membership is active or expired?

Thanks for your time!

Car Freak"

I told him I wish people would use their real name when they e-mailed me. Frankly, I buy my membership 3 years at a go and it may have expired.

Are you thinking this was not from 'car freak' and its someone with malicious intentions?

If so what would those intentions be?  Mine did not have any sort of link to click on or ask for any specific information.

I can assure you it is legitimate. Anyone receiving this e-mail will hopefully take the time to answer.

She, ( I know who it is ) is probably trying to make things run a little better.

One thing I noticed the other day on the members list , that there were a lot of people that signed up, but have not been on the site in years. Maybe they posted less than 10 times. Most around 2.
How long do you stay listed at this site ?
I was a member on a couple other sites and if you dont post you are taken off after 1 years time.
Doesnt this take up space on the servers ? I'm not a computer guy, so I was just wondering .

I would think the space taken up by a members profile would be significantly less than a single photo posted on this site.

In the Cadillac community there have been two people that have used the name “carfreak” that I know of.

G'day one and all,

Please be advised that it is not the policy of the group of appointed Moderators to contact any Member or Guest as to their CLC Membership status, nor do we intend to.

There is no requirement for anyone to post their Membership Number, but the space is there if one wishes to avail themselves of the opportunity to broadcast to the internet world that they are in fact a member of the best car club in the world.

Sometimes we might request the clarification of a number, that is posted, but that is after consultation with the CLC Office, and the Member in question, receives a Carbon Copy (Cc:) and knows what is going on.

Further, any correspondence from one of the Moderators will contain their full name, position and CLC Membership Number, with a Cc; to the other Moderators to make them aware of the correspondence.

Any other contact regarding the CLC Message Forum operations without proper identification should be correctly treated as Spam, and if at all possible, please contact one of the Moderators either by a Personal Message, through the Message Board, or directly to my email address  bronline@internode.on.net.

If the message is via the Forum, as in a PM, then a simple "Report to Moderator" will bring it to our attention.

The current CLC Forum Moderators are Bill Hedge, Barry Wheeler, Kevin Bielinski, and Jim Eccleston, with David Rubin as the VP, Information Technology.   These names appear in red print at the bottom of the forums main page when viewing "Users Online"

Bruce Reynolds,
CLC No. 18992,
Head Moderator
CLC Message Board

PS.   We have more than enough problems with Spammers attacking the Message Board, without individual members being flooded with apparent spam.

Isn't it quite simple? Anyone posting a false membership number, posting a membership number when they are not a member, is misrepresentation.

They should be told to cease and desist.

It's not difficult for any member with the current directory to figure out that they are being fraudulent.

The first thing I thought of when I read the email in the post at the top was that if carfreak was officially working for the club s/he would have access to the information s/he is seeking through the club office.

Thanks for the clarification Bruce.  And thanks to all the moderators for their work keeping this forum in order.
