Title: The projects I buy never have keys...Where do we get locks & keys?
Post by: Mike Baillargeon #15848 on May 07, 2016, 08:03:50 PM
The latest project is a 1955..........no keys for the ignition, trunk, doors or glove box.

Where is a good place to get these new locks and keys?

If the locks are okay, then to get Ignition Keys cut, remove the lock from the door, and take it to a Locksmith, and he will be able to cut new keys.   Even possible without pulling the lock to pieces as there will be a number on the side of the lock.

The same for the Trunk.   Remove the Glove Box lock, as these keys are the same.

Take the glove compartment lock and a door lock out.  There are numbers stamped on the lock.  Those are the key codes.  Contact Jesser’s Keys at http://www.jessersclassickeys.com/ (http://www.jessersclassickeys.com/)   They can cut the keys by code and provide the correct style keys.

About 3 decades ago I got tired of all different keys for different cars and
different drivers.  I got some locks made up and installed them, so now
the same 2 keys will operate any car.  Very convenient ever since; need
to swap 4 locks when I change cars.  I don't do anything with the glove box.

Generally the trunk key will operate the glove box.  But the glove box may
have one less tumblers, so there isn't enough info there to make a trunk
key, unless there is a number stamped on it that the locksmith can
translate into a key.  Bruce Roe

Yes, the glove box lock has the code for the trunk.  I did that with my 68 ELDO and Jesser’s made what appears to be brand new keys with the correct V and crest.  The keys worked perfectly.
The only problem is it has the small hole for the key ring, the part that the dealer would punch out is not punched out.  But maybe that was because I did not ask him to punch it out.

Thanks for the info guys.

One last thing......If I don't have the key for the ignition, how do I get the tumble out of the switch?

The hole for the paper clip isn't lined up with the pin that needs to be pushed and then all needs to be turned counterclockwise.

Thanks again,

That is why you need to get the door lock out.

In most cases, the locks will be matching, unless a door has been changed some time ago.

The Door key that will be cut, will allow you to remove the ignition lock.
