We're trying to find the 1949 Cadillac that my engine came from, so we can return it. Know anyone with VIN 496214688?

There is no such car as a Cadillac "Sedanette" in 1949. Those were manufactured only in 1930 and 1931 in very small quantities. The model is correctly called a "Club Coupe." There is an excellence article authored by Dave Rubin in the March 2019 issue of The Self-Starter magazine that explains it in detail.
