I am looking to replace the Zerk fittings on my 38 60S. Tried to grease it today and 7 of the first 10 fittings are painted over and will not take grease.
Does anyone know the size and where I can purchase them?
Thanks
Jim
I have found that when these fittings don't pass grease through them, I remove them if they unscrew, and then try the grease gun again. In most cases, the grease goes through, with the real cause of the stoppage being that the grease "pocket" in the actual fitting being greased has gone rock solid, and simply won't let the grease through.
Bruce. >:D
Take one out, usually Napa can match them up.
Thanks Bruce. I have 3 out, I cleaned the paint off of them, heated with a torch and burned out all the old grease, then polished the fitting and pumped grease through them. They now work. I will do this to all of them if I am unable to locate new ones, but perhaps I really do not want the new ones if they came from China.
Thanks David, I will try NAPA tomorrow or Friday.
Jim
NAPA only had 1 card with 5 of the larger size, none of the smaller ones. I will remove all of them, clean the paint off, then heat the old grease up, and force new grease through.
thanks everyone.
Jim
Be careful torching as the spring can loose tension and the ball will not seal and oily grease will ooze out.
I find that if I remove them and put them in an old soup can of gas for a day or two, especially if I swirl the can every so often, the paint as well as the old grease dissolve. Then try the grease gun on them before replacing.
Wayne I like that idea. I tried paint thinner, but gas may be better. What are the thoughts on using brake fluid?
Jim
Gas will work, acetone will work, so will carb cleaner or brake cleaner. Use some nitrile gloves while handling, especially the acetone. The brake fluid will probably eat up the paint but I'm not sure how will it will touch the old grease.
I've never tried brake fluid. I do use brake cleaner on most things just before I paint them.
