Title: Front engine mount for a 1971 Eldorado
Post by: The Tassie Devil(le) on September 02, 2022, 09:25:43 PM
G'day all,

As the heading says, I am searching for a Front Engine Mount (Rubber Insulator) for a 1971 Eldorado.

Or where one can get their old one rebuilt in a reasonable time.

Thanks,

Bruce. >:D

maybe where you're located, but I get a bunch of hits for these at the usual parts places when I search.   Cadillacpartsltd does rebuilds.  Steel Rubber also rebuilds I think.
Unless I'm missing something and it's a special, should be available state side.
I was able to get them for the '58 with no problems.

Bruce,
I'm paying attention to your thread as well because I thought I had proper engine mounts for my 1979 on-the-shelf. They were listed on Rockauto and all other parts sites as being the correct replacement. To make a long story short the mounts advertised for 1979-1985 are not correct for 1979 and at least some 1980 Eldorado/Seville applications. Mine in fact do not exist so I'm working on a replacement.

Any leads you find with respect to rebuilding service would be welcome. I tried to search for places but the problem is the searches yield every local garage... they are obviously not rebuilding they are replacing like any normal person could do with a vehicle which you could still buy parts for. I think part of the problem is the aftermarket incorrectly identified a proper replacement. Once it was incorrectly identified the aftermarket doesn't even realize a replacement doesn't exist.

I hope yours are truly off-the-shelf parts which you can order but I would caution you to look very closely at photos of replacements in case you run into an issue like I did. The incorrect PN in my case had only 1 obvious difference but in fact there were 3 key points which prevented a drop-in. I was able to overcome 2 of the issues but the third issue is the correct PN has a 28 degree ramp angle and the incorrect part has a 40 degree ramp.

Lately there has been more activity on my generation Eldorado on Cadillac Forums so I started the topic there:
https://www.cadillacforums.com/threads/79-85-eldorado-motor-mount-disaster-scenario-with-all-available-aftermarket-parts.1123413/

If Steel Rubber is rebuilding them maybe I could send them new "shells" which they would mold. The most challenging part seems to be how to get the replacement flexible portion to adhere. I know how to do it now but so far the cost of the "promoter" is very high and container sizes are limited (a lot goes a long way).

Mine had not failed yet but while everything was apart I wanted to prepare. I made a 3D printed checking fixture to verify what were not easy to take measurements.

BTW: According to a thread Bruce Roe started around 6 months ago our transmission mounts are as well now made of "unobtainium". If I had a spare part, even a damaged part, off the vehicle I could work on both engine and trans at the same time.

G'day Scott,

What Rock Auto shows is not correct for the '71 to at least the '73, but right for the '74 to '76.

The early ones (Pictured) use a single centrally-located front mount, and a pair of outwardly-spaced ones at the rear.

The later ones moved from the single front mount to the twin mounts for some reason.

Jim,

Sadly, No Cadillacs of any style or year in any Wrecking yards in Tasmania.

That's an interesting mount Bruce. Those front engine brackets look almost like they were designed to anticipate front-side-angled mounts. Are the rears you mentioned the transmission mounts or additional motor mounts? I guess the only difference would be the placement because the engine and trans are hard bolted to each other. They likely went to side mounts in the front because the engine wants to rotate. That single front mount is big but the farther you get from the axis the easier it would be to support.

There are no longer any yards close to me either so I can believe it's difficult where you are. Is there anyone offering mount rebuild there? I did quite a lot of research in bonding 2 part urethane to metal. It's as well a difficult search because there are tons of results for painting primers; assuming you need a primer/promoter for painting. The surface prep is critical (blasted and thoroughly cleaned). I found a PPG product but the smallest unit was a pint and it was about $700 per pint. I did also measure the durometer of the wrong part I mentioned and it was 61 to 65 shore A based on 5 measurements. The originals were natural rubber but as I know that would require a mold so I thought about pouring with 2-part urethane.

My mounts haven't failed but since Greg mentioned Steele Rubber can do them  I might ask about approximate cost. It's a part which would be nice to have on the shelf though so that's why I'm still tempted to try making them or seeing if Steel Rubber would mold the shells I plan to create. That should be easier for them as they will be clean, no rubber to burn out, and I designed in temporary locators for pouring.

BTW: Those "wings" in front and rear of the single mount in your picture are apparently designed to dampen a certain frequency. That feature is also on the 1979 mount but does not seem to be on the 1981 parts.
