The Tassie Devil(le)

G'day all,

I am in need of a set of 4 Door Pull end covers for a 1972 Eldorado.

Pictured in the pictures of the pulls on my doors are what I took off a '71 Eldorado that I stripped for parts, and these appear to be a normal replacement part as they do not attach like the originals, and the original '72 end that I have.

The scrolled end cover is what there should be on the '72, but mine is missing the locating/retaining pin at the opposite end to the spring clip.   The pin should be just to the rear of the end of the spring, near the end of the piece as seen in the backside picture.

From looking at the parts I have, I believe that there must be a lot of broken ones out there, with the pins missing, as I have a few frames with the broken pins remaining in the frame.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce. >:D

Why not just drill a shallow hole in the cap and screw a 4-40 size screw into it, cut the screw head off, and use it as the pin?

I've done that several times on pot metal moldings, trim caps, etc. I preset the depth on the drill press so I don't drill all the way through.

G'day Tim,

I could do this, if I had at least 3 more of the original covers.

Those are going to be hard to find. All the 1971-72 cars I got parts from never had the scrolls on that trim cap, Eldorado only I imagine.

Hopefully you an get some.

Yes, it was a poor design; if you pried at the wrong end, the diecast pin would snap off.  Possibly attach a piece of nail with JB Weld if you can get it over there.  I've used it to repair car emblems, too.

Another suggestion is to use a small piece of Velcro on the back side of the cover where the pin was and the opposite Velcro piece on the door pull assembly.  It should remain tight but give you the convenience of quickly removing the cover to do inside door maintenance.

G'day Jim,

The suggestion is good, but Velcro would bring the piece out too far.   That is, not sitting flush.

But, I have to find some first to work on.

There has to be some out there.

Still looking.

Even look at ones with the missing pins.

G'day Bruce,
This isn't going to do either of us any good but when I first bought my new 72 Eldo I started having issues with the door pull end covers falling off and over the first few years before I realized that it was the big screws holding the pulls to the door frame working their way out and pushing the end covers out I thought it was the covers themselves and so bought new ones. I have a bunch of 72 eldo trim parts including about 8 end covers SOMEWHERE in my garage and when and if I find them (probably hidden inside a carburetor box or something else), Ill let you know. I hope both of us live long enough for that to happen.
Cheers

Thanks Greg,

My car had one on the door, and someone had replaced the other screws with ones with larger heads.

Please keep looking.

Reach out to John Abend on the Collective. He's usually just 65-70 but I've seen a lot of early 70's parts
there too. If he doesn't have them, he knows who does. I've got so many parts from him his name is on my showboard. I've been under the car in the shop with Michael, got John on a video link, showed him the part Michael wants to replace, and John ships it immediately if he has it.

Bruce,

My Velco suggestion was a poor one.  As you stated, it's too thick.  Buy some foam double-stick tape.  I have a roll about 3/16" thick.
