Just installed new shoes .Did I do something wrong here. I think the star should be pointing the other way. Take a look does this seem right. This is L front wheel. And what about the pads. Is the primary in the right place. When looking at the pic the left side is toward the front of the car. What needs to be done here

 Hey Jon,
Everything looks correct to me. The primary shoe, the short one, goes to the front, and your self adjusting mechanism is all installed correctly.
I am curious though as to why everything is painted that tan color. And is there paint on the shoe linings as well?

That appears to be a fine silt, dust. I use an alkaline (lye) based cleaner like super clean to wash the assembly and minimize exposure to creating air born dust

Ya it looks like whitish grey fine powder. I was askin about my set up because when I looked at my 1959 the star is facing the other way, So 59 and 60 must be different.

Yes, they are. The 1959 brakes must be manually adjusted, not so for the 60 ones.

Are all 4 the 1960 self adjusting. I thought it was just the rears. So why am I adjusting mine with the star?

I think the difference between the 59 and the 60 is that the 60 has self adjusters, the 59 does not.

Yes, but all 4 wheels? If so why am I adjusting the pads with that star thing, if they will adjust themselves.
Jon. Kluczynski

The Tassie Devil(le)

They have to be adjusted initially by moving the star wheel, and the self-adjusting part only comes into play when reversing and hitting the brakes.   If there is any looseness in the adjustment the movement of the shoes in the rearward movement causes the arm to move the adjusting star.   They will not self-adjust going forward.

The only way to back off the star if one needs to get the drums off due to wear is to place a thin shaft into the adjusting hole to push the adjuster away from the star, and then the star can be manually wound backwards with the manual adjusting tool.

The way the adjusting lever works is to grip the star so that it cannot be manually wound backwards.

The shoes look to be installed correctly.  The only thing I would suggest is that forming a bevel on the top and bottom edges of the shoes can make the brakes a little smoother, less grabby in response to light touch on the brake pedal.  Otherwise, they look right to me.

If you look the ends of the shoe material, you'll see it cut at an angle. This was how they came stock but some grind them down even more.

What kind of paint is used on the backing plate, does it have to be high temp paint?

Cadman-iac

No, it doesn't require a high temp paint, as it doesn't get that hot on the backing plate. The shoes and the drums are what gets really hot.
I've just been using a low gloss rattle can black paint on mine, but you could also use that POR-15 for that if you want. It just takes a while to dry completely.

The amount of brake dust coincides with the type of lining you're running. I'd imagine those are "organic" shoes.
