Title: Data tag replacement manufacturers
Post by: Quentin Hall on September 22, 2022, 10:28:46 PM
I posted a few weeks back that AG Backeast has disappeared in to the ether...
Is anyone else reproducing cowl data tags????.
I have the original damaged tag and all authentication of vin and matching engine number.

would it be possible to "print" one with a 3d printer, wouldnt be the aluminum material they were, but might be passable when installed on the firewall, they can do wonderful things with the new 3D printers?   harveyb

AG Backeast tags were 100% factory correct.
I think 3d printing would be a last resort.
I'm just hoping that someone realises the importance of the service that AG Backeast provided our hobby. If someone knows the owner then hopefully an understanding of what has happened might be prudent.
If no one else has the equipment then a big issue arises in the correct restoration of these vehicles exists.

Hey  Q,
Why don't you try to find out what happened to him & possibly buy his  equipment?? You might be dealing with his heirs if he's gone.
Good Luck, Bob

I would seriously entertain that notion if the opportunity arose.

If anyone has any way of reaching Brett, at least to discover his intentions of what is or isn't happening with the business, that would be a good start.
He was in Colorado.

Would it be hard to set up a press and punch out these ID tags?

The font, the metal, the setup ??

Are they copyrighted?

Info doesn't come to you, you have to go get it.
There's a bunch of people that do this.   Just search.
One is named trimtags.com!
Check with your local DMV if it's permissible to remove or replace these as it varies by state.

Looking at TrimTags.com they do not specifically say Cadillac but this tag from their gallery is close to the tag from my 61. Even with the magicmirror in script.

Going to    http://www.trimtags.com/

They don't do anything 1930s or 1940s

Where are we going to get our ID tags reproduced?

Yes it's a worry Mike. I've sent an email to Trimtags. We'll see.

I sent an email to gm Heritage Centre ... (yes it's lower case gm now). Got a reply from she/her stating that there are many replacement data tag vendors but gm does not do them.
Hurrumphhhhh.

Hey Q,
Why don't you post the town where Backeast lived??  If someone is willing to go there, you can communicate privately. My guess is no one makes them as good as he did.

Spoke with Joe from Trimtags. He could do it but would need a blank. He doesn't have the dues for Cadillac data tags.

There has to have  a TOWN  to go with the PO.
It sounds like this search is going the same direction as the 67 Cad in the wrecking yard. No where. I wish I was closer to some of these situations. I'd make them happen to a conclusion.

Couple possible phone numbers for Brett and/or Carl Stoutenberg
860-677-5087
860-747-2942
860-463-3385

Possible addresses:
294 Marie St Grand Junction CO 81503
292 W Morrison Ct Grand Junction CO 81507
707 Washington Ct Grand Junction CO 81507

Perhaps someone could reach out and find the status of AG Backeast.  Also maybe suggest if they have the business for sale to offer some or all of their assets to TrimTags.com.  Or Quentin could acquire the assets and start his AG Indoor Outhouse creations.   :)

Many years ago, Dave Mikol facilitated the donation of MANY important pieces of a GM Futurliner being parted out in SoCal to #10 owned by NATMUS & being restored in SW Michigan.  He was just an interested observer who made it happen and I heard both parties were happy with the outcome.

Thanks Sue. Not a common last name. Someone local needs to do some detective work. They could all be related. The other option is to cold call the phone #'s you found.

This is why I am so disappointed.

Supposedly posted from Detroit on July 15. Sent in an envelope apparently with no tracking or insurance.

 Just so $&@%#*.

A few years ago I had an email conversation with AG Backeast, in the conversation I learned his supply of aluminum for his tags was Home Depot. Simply anneal the stuff and it was very malleable for stamping. I'll have to see if I can find that exchange.
