Dilemma? My 1964 coupe de ville needs new valve covers gasket (oil leaks) should I repaint the valve covers before replacing the gasket ( small paint peeling still visible)? The car has less than 15K miles original documented. Your thoughts? Does repainting take away from the originality?

Don't paint them. They are only original once.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for the Presidents Preservation Award. Don't paint them.

Probably a little late, but just keep in mind for the next time.
To preserve the valve covers, don't tighten the screws/bolts as tight as you can.  Look in the shop manual and torque the retainers to specs.  This will prevent bending the covers and damage to the gaskets.  If over torqued, the gasket usually splits at the retainers.
