With that other thread percolating about mileage, I'd figured I would quiz the audience to see what their MPG was.
Mine coming was 12.2, leaving was about 12, running between 69 to 73 miles per hour.
What was yours?
Driving 1970 Cadillac DVC a total of 609 miles each way primarily on Rt 64, which includes sustained grades of 5% or more for 5 miles both ways (not much flat road). Whenerver possible drove 75-80mph (speed limit was 70 mph most of the way):
1. Drive to KY from VA the weather was extremely windy, the side winds were constantly causing correction much of the drive. It rained off and on (probably only 10% of the time, but it forced a mostly top up drive). There was a major traffic jam that cost 45 minutes just approaching Louisville. Driving time was about 10.5 hours with two stops for gas, about 58 mpg average with stops.
Mileage was about 12mpg on the trip to GN
2. Drive home back to VA the weather was sunny and no wind. On the first 200 miles top was up roads were wet. On the last 400 miles, top was down. Traffic was light and I made it back in 8.75 hours, an incredible 70mph average with two stops for gas. As we left the first stop for gas with top down on the highway after about 10 minutes of 80 mph, my girl friend said "this is lovely". It was a wonderful trip back.
Mileage was about 13.5mpg on the trip home
The dual exhausts help improve mileage and engine cooling with high engine demand on the upgrades.
Now she runs a little better after over 1,200 miles of highway driving. Time for an oil change (based on every 1,500 miles), but the oil looks clean and not a drop was burned.
I got ~15.5 mpg running around 70-75 mph in the '58.

Along a 175 mile stretch from my home in Georgia to a gas station in Tennessee I got 17.9 mpg in my '49. It's a bit better than the 16-17 mpg I used to get in the past, but I just tuned the car up with new points etc. and new plugs, as well as having my carb rebuilt not long ago. Went 55-65 mph and used no oil or coolant.
I have covered that road a few times in reverse, dropping down from
IL to KY, then 64 to Virginia Beach. With extra capacity of a diesel
tank (gas engine), can easily cover 609 miles with one gas stop,
usually average 66 mph, 19 mpg at 70 mph. Since the factory
odometer usually reads high, mine have been recalibrated to an

The 609 miles I got from "Google Maps, and the 8.75 hours I got from my phone. 609/8.75 = 69.6mph average. The speedo read 75-80 mph much of the time and I think it is fairly accurate, as otherwise never would have made that kind of time. 609/13.5 = 45.1 gallons of gas consumed, and the tank holds 26 gallons. If I drove slower, especially up hill, maybe I could have gotten 15.0 mpg and only used 40.6 gallons and made it with one gas stop, but where is the fun in that?
I got 11 mpg with cruise set at 70. But I trailered my 62 with a 04 Dodge Ram 1500 hemi. The car and trailer weigh 6600. Does that count for this thread?
I got 16.9 in the 55 before the speedo cable broke. I was going between about 60 and 70. Probably averaging about 65...
When the diesel cars were hitting the junk yard, I grabbed the fuel
tanks. These added 3 or 4 gallons, extending my range. I put in gas
style pickups and caps, after carefully recalibration for a gas gauge
I could really believe. Some are 28 gallons. Bruce Roe
We got 15.5 in our 55 Fleetwood average speed of about 65. Also did not use any oil,coolant,or transmission fluid. 8)

But it is interesting to note the trailered car mpg. I have thought of buying a truck/trailer so I didn't have to drive the '70, interesting that it gets about the same mileage, the only difference is comfort, fewer thumbs up and less folks asking about it while fueling...

Yea I was pleased that is pushing 6600 plus truck weight of 6700.
I got all the thumbs up and conversations at the pump as if I was driving it.

I would be very careful about running petrol on a tank designed for diesel.
Petrol tanks, if they are steel, have to be internally tinned to stop internal rusting, but not so with tanks for diesel, as the oil within the diesel does a perfect job of rust prevention.
Not a problem with modern plastic or aluminium tanks.

Funny how we all enjoy our cars. I bought my 1970 DVC to enjoy driving it, a 472 engine and a 18'-9" convertible is the ultimate. Driving a truck towing 7,000lbs of trailer and car to me is like suffering through an IRS audit only worse.
My 1966 Eldorado averaged 14.8 mpg to Louisville and back, A/C on the entire way.

This is the first time I trailered it. I did it because it is an original 57k car. IF I drove it to Louisville it would add 1% for the milage it has aquired over the last 57 years. I drive it locally up and to 100 miles 2-3 times a year.
