Does anyone happen to have the original vinyl cover pad for their Cadillac still attached under the hood? I wanted to know if there is a fiberglass pad behind the actual vinyl padding or is it just the vinyl padding with no fiberglass behind it?

The reason why I am asking is because my '54 is missing the original pad, but I purchased a reproduction vinyl one from Caddy Daddy the other day and before I install it I want to make sure that it doesn't need the fiberglass pad as well.

I replaced the hood pad on my 53. It is fiberglass covered with vinyl. The fiberglass is exposed on the under side of the hood. it is attached using glue. The 3M Super77 spray stuff works well. Best to remove the hood and set it upside down on a stand to install.

Thank you for that. So you do need the fiberglass pad attached to the hood first using the adhesive, then install the thick vinyl back pad on over the fiberglass padding?

I just want to make sure I'm installing this correctly. That means I still need to buy the fiberglass pad before installing the vinyl pad.

Do you have something like on the attached picture? I just glued the assembly on the hood.
Maybe you should show us what you got.

Hi Roger,

My '54 is actually missing the underhood pad altogether. It was like that when I first bought it. Found out that there was an underhood fire at one point in time that most likely burned up the padding.

I did purchase a reproduction pad of the black vinyl pad like the one in your picture. I simply wanted to know if a separate fiberglass pad was mounted on the hood first, then the vinyl pad would mount on top and over the fiberglass padding?

Or did Cadillac use just the black vinyl back padding and no fiberglass pad? I see that Cadillac stopped using the vinyl pad with the burlap backing in 1958, and started using strictly fiberglass moving forward starting in '59, but online vintage Cadillac vendors are offering both the vinyl and fiberglass backing so I'm a little confused.

Well, it seems that you like to complicate your existence! In the parts book, there is just one number for hood insulation. Under the vinyl in the picture, there was "something" not very thick and finally a coarse cloth which was glued to the hood. That's all I know.

Thanks guys for the info. I did go ahead and purchase the fiberglass pad and will install it first, then will use the vinyl pad to lay over it. If it's too thick and sticks out too far like it will start touching the radiator, then I will simply just use the vinyl backing with adhesive.

BTW I noticed some old tar like undercoating spray stuck on the hood that looks like it was used as a way to hold down the original pad.

Just wanted to do a quick update. So I did go ahead and install the fiberglass pad first, and the vinyl padding 2nd.

I sanded down the rust on the underside of the hood with a grinder and removed old material, then sprayed some rubber undercoating with rust prevention to help deaden the sound even more. Used 3M adhesive spray and it all turned out great. Here are some pics of the results.

This has to be the thickest under hood padding combo I've ever seen from a  car, almost like a thick blanket. Coming from the factory like that, Cadillac was really trying to make the engine quiet and insulated from the passengers. It made a huge difference inside the car now. The engine is much quieter.
