I'm trying to verify the authenticity of the engine and vin numbers for a '55 Cadillac 60S. The engine stamp and lube label inside the door both indicate 556083147. However that number does not correlate with the numbers on the stamped data plate under the cowl. Should they match?

The door tag and engine number should match. The cowl tag is the serial number of series 60 S production. I think the title (vin) should match the engine number.

Right, the VIN and engine numbers are not shown on the cowl mounted data plate.  If the stamped engine number and the lube label inside the door match, that is what you want --- title should have that number also since it is the VIN.

While this is a very good exercise to validate that you have an original engine I've found that most of the 55 Cadillacs have their original engines unless modified.
