whats the best way to rewrap some wiring in the engine compartment. some of the cloth has degraded but i would like to keep it original thanks john
I'm afraid you cant keep it original John as the looms were braided by a special machine from many strands of cloth, so some sort of cloth loom tape is the best you can hope for.
John,
Some of the wiring harness manufacturers can run your harness through thier machine again.

Yes, but for that John would have to completely remove his harness and once the braid has started to disintegrate they dont survive being removed and replaced, it would be time for a new loom.
That is what I meant. Remove harness, remove braided loom and redo harness in the machine.
Cheers,Pat MacPhail
Wrap up the exposed wires with electrical tape or get a new harness. Rhode Island Wiring (www.riwire.com) sells the whole harness and looks original with the cloth insulation over the modern insulated wires. I want to say that the price for the dash forward wiring is around $900.
There are cloth-looking (but not) braided sleeving that are somewhat springy, and can be just slipped on an existing bundle of wires without having to disconnect either end. I keep a supply of different diameters on hand, easy to cover an exposed bundle quickly and looks pretty decent, much nicer than those ugly corrugated plastic split looms at NAPA.

That looks like a very good solution, shame we dont have it here in the UK!
