Does anyone here know how much a 346 flathead weighs? How about its predecessor?

Hard information to locate from any official source but here goes with what I could find - from the War Department Technical Manual on the "tank" engines dated 1944:

1G series engine with "accessories" (1942): 1,300 lb

3G series engine with "accessories" (1942): 1,385 lb

Don't know whether these weights included or excluded the auto transmissions. They would have been slightly heavier than the car engines though the 1G engine, which did not have some of the heavy additions (like the front mounted Generator bracketry), would have been closer to the contemporary car engine.

Alternatively, if you can wait till about March 2010 I will weigh the one I have under re-build.

According to Schnieders book the OHV was 699#'s & the flat head 188#'s more. He doesn't mention accessories. HTH, Bob

Just curious.

Someone I know is preparing to pull a 390 out of a '59 for a rebuild and purchased a new lift for the job. We found a chart showing the weight at somewhere between 700 and 720 pounds.

This led to a discussion of the weights of other Cadillac engines - V16 for example is around 1300 pounds.

Anyway, there was no listing for the weight of the flathead V8s.

900 pounds is a heavy hunk of metal.
