Hey guys, I just discovered my voltage regulator is aftermarket and would like to replace with original OEM Delco/ Remy type. Does anyone know the correct part number, Voltage Regulator specs and a source for purchase? The car is 1956 Cadillac Coupe DeVille with 365 no AC. Also, will an original VR cover typically fit on an aftermarket VR?  Thanks for the help!

To find the original part number, look it up in the GM Master Parts Book found here:

http://www.modifiedcadillac.org/documents/Shop_Manuals_and_Illus_Catalogs/Master%20Parts%20List%20thru%201964/

The original cap will fit on every aftermarket VR I have seen. The after market ones I've seen lately are solid state and available from the major chains.

Well,

There a various answer to the Voltage Regulator Question.

The 1956 Master Parts manual shows that 1953 thru 1956 take a 1119003, 12 Volt, 30 amp regulator. But the shop manual and the National Manual for 1956 show the regulator as 1119001.

The numbers on Voltage Regulators Changed as newer variations were produced. These numbers have probably been changed also.

Have Fun.

My suggestion is to go to the store and buy a new one. Even Advance Auto's computer goes back that far and they have the part in stock. '56 is spec'd as a 20 amp. I put a '57 on mine because it's a 30 amp.

Otto,

I beg to differ -- 56 is a 30 amp voltage regulator.

Use VR fuses to protect it.

You might be right, although I would have sworn that the '56 was a 20 amp or 25. I know they stepped up each year and I bought one from a more recent year - I thought 57.

What is the 57 rated?

Otto,

For the 57 Coupe DeVille, Regulator 1119002, output:

13.8 to 14.8 volts

32 to 37 amps

Now if you want power I have a 60 amp generator for a 56, rebuilt.

The standard generator is what, 50 amp? I forget. 45amp?

OK thanks for the advice guys! One more question though. Is a 1119001 Voltage regulator from say a 1962 corvette the same VR as a 1119001 from 1956?
